Known until a few years ago mainly for the military prison, Gaeta is now a tourist town among the most prominent of the entire Lazio, thanks to heavy investments in bathing facilities and accommodation well harmonized with the medieval town center.

There is much to see in Gaeta: it is one of the areas with the highest concentration of historic monuments in Lazio (Rome excluded), including civic buildings, ecclesiastical and architectural buildings dating from the eighth century BC to the fascist era.
